Functions

Bangladesh Bank, Sylhet started functioning as Exchange control Unit since October, 1964. It started full-pledged functioning from 2nd September, 1983. It performs Central Banking functions and oversees the compliance of policies and procedures framed by Head Office and relevant banking laws and regulations. The operational jurisdiction of the office is limited to Sylhet division which consists of 4 (four) districts viz. Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Habigonj and Sunamgonj.

Sylhet Office acts as Banker to the banks and Banker to the govt. It maintains Current Accounts of main branches of all local scheduled banks and provides remittance facilities to banks, public bodies and staff in the form of Bank Draft, Govt. Draft, MT, T/T. It also maintains accounts of various departments of the Govt. The Office runs a computerized Clearing House for the settlement of mutual obligations of the branches of 49 banks located in Sylhet city. These banks may avail T/T discounting facilities in order to meet unforeseen shortages of cash.

The office supervises and monitors the activities of 713 branches of 49 main stream banks of its jurisdiction by means of both on-site & off-site supervision. It also supervises the activities of 188 branches of three specialized financial institutions of Sylhet Division ( Grameen Bank, Ansar VDP Unnayan Bank and Karmasangthan Bank regulated by special acts). Several departments are engaged in carrying out this supervisory role. Sylhet office maintains regular surveillance over the foreign exchange transactions of 45 Authorized Dealers, 14 Money Changers, 4 Limited Money Changers & 2 Indenting Firms. It also oversees the lending & recovery operations of Agricultural Credits, SME financing of the division. On behalf of the govt., the office sells and en-cashes a variety of savings instruments. The office remits money to and from branches of scheduled banks, chests and sub-chests of Sylhet Division. Sometimes it also meets remittance needs of the banks outside the division. Our Cash Department transacts, sorts, examine and exchange cash with banks and members of the public. The office extends refund facilities of defective notes. A number of sections of the office are engaged in internal administration, welfare, internal control, procurements of articles, supervising construction and maintenance activities.

The office also performs some developmental functions. It acts as a forum for banks, financial institutions and local business communities and holds meetings, training programs, seminars and workshops for proper implementation of national monetary policy and side by side, it ensures effective role of the banking sector with the end in view of sustaining the cascade of economic activities towards the coveted growth of Sylhet Division.
